"I can't hear "What Will I Do" without tears coming to my eyes.  I'm leery of tribute albums, but this is a good one.  It's nice to see an artist who understands and appreciates the soul of Mickey's songs honoring him like this.  Thanks, Kacey."
--Kris Kristofferson

"The new single from Kacey's tribute CD to the late Mickey Newbury
is a sensuous, melodic ballad of loss that suits her husky alto to a T.
The surprise is her vaulting into her soprano range on the choruses
and nailing the notes."

Nipples To The Wind Reviews:

Review: "What a bunch of characters"
By KAREN SHADE Tulsa World Scene Writer
6/2/2007

This two-woman show is zany and way too much fun
They don't spar with swords on the open seas or sling webs from the wrists around the greater metropolitan area.

But the women of "Nipples to the Wind" just might have more, um, gumption than any super hero you're likely to see on the summer blockbuster big screen.

Plus they go through a lot more costume changes to play some of the nuttiest characters to take the Tulsa Performing Arts Center stage in recent years.

If you weren't a fan of "Nipples" already, you will be after watching Paula Coco and Janye Anderson in this hysterical two-woman show at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

Was that crass? It doesn't compare with the sight of 60-something-year-old Mavis Billings hoarded up at home in her Christmas get-up as she types the Billings family annual newsletter. Mavis breaks long enough to snag a stray snack on the floor between nicotine drags before she has to pull the long hair attached to it from her mouth.

Neither does it compare to Brenda, a Southern belle interrupting her early cocktail hour to chat with her neighbor on the porch and swat some flies. I won't fill you in on the details.

That was only in the first half of this uproarious comedy that left everyone attending Thursday night's opening in fits of laughter by intermission. Of course, the send-off into half-time -- two grannies getting old school while chaperoning a seventh-grade dance -- had a lot to do with that.

Bring a hankie or some Kleenex -- you'll want something to wipe away the tears from laughing so hard.

Playwright Coco penned 11 monologues and self-contained scenes for "Nipples to the Wind," named for an old Southern expression meant to encourage and empower a woman when times get tough. So, no -- it's not that kind of show (and there's no nudity), although Coco takes every opportunity to raise some brows. "Take some 'Nipples' home," reads the display marketing play merchandise in the theater lobby. That got some giggles and, no doubt, some T-shirt and CD sales.

But Coco's gift for sparkling dialogue clings to her eccentrics -- from Flora, the suicide hotline counselor who puts her callers on hold, to Susie, the little league mom in jail for assault and battery.

Coco is an expert at interpreting her own work in performance, but Anderson hits you in the gut every time with her comic timing and little mannerisms that truly help her morph into a completely new character each time she steps on stage.

The show's high point is its comedy, without a doubt, but this marvelous staging is not without poignancy. Substitute teacher Ms. Casey's health lesson is at once hilarious and a little heartbreaking. A particularly well-scripted episode with three sisters at confession clocks in at around 20 minutes, but is so revealing about these women and their complicated family relationships that it's a wonder.

Songwriter and singer Kacey Jones, who opened the show Thursday on a warm note, provides an array of scene-inspired tunes with clever, punchy lyrics played between the simple set changes with her clever lyrics.

With boldness and a willingness to throw themselves into characters often more zany than any making it out of the cinema these days, Coco and Anderson make "Nipples to the Wind" as interesting for seasoned playgoers as it is outrageous and inviting.

Zany women-centered 'Wind' a breath of fresh air
By: PAM KRAGEN - Staff Writer
NORTH COUNTY TIMES (San Diego County)

With a name like "Nipples to the Wind," Paula Coco's stage comedy conjures up some curiously high expectations. And fortunately, the hilarious two-woman show lives up to its name.

But as provocative as the title may sound, it's no strip show. As singer/songwriter Kacey Jones told the audience before a performance last weekend at Vista's Avo Playhouse (where the city-owned theater's marquee bore the disclaimer "Not affiliated with the city of Vista"), the actors have "checked their nipples at the city limits and will pick them back up when they leave town."

"Nipples to the Wind" is a phrase used in Texas that means "head up and chin out," or living life with gusto, and the 14 colorful characters in the play are unapologetic in their no-holds-barred approaches to life.

There's Flora, the self-absorbed Latina suicide hotline worker who repeatedly "shushes" a desperate caller to talk about her own boyfriend problems. And Susie, the Texas-raised Little League mom who's been jailed for assaulting an opposing teammates' parent at a game. And then there's Melissa, the middle-aged mom who nostalgically recalls her thrilling (and accidental breast-baring) teenage encounter with one of The Monkees.

The play is actually 10 short skits (most of them monologues) with Coco and actress Janye Anderson alternating in each scene and then teaming up for a trio of longer one-acts. Coco, a stand-up comedian, is the best storyteller of the duo, while Anderson is the better character actress.

Among the best scenes in the show is "Greetings From the Billings," an irreverent take on the glowing Christmas letters that clog our mailboxes every December. Anderson plays Mavis, a belching, chain-smoking grandma who's composing a cheerful (but painfully honest) newsletter about her dysfunctional family, including her incarcerated pedophile husband, her multimarried daughter (who's set to wed a "cured" gay man) and her 29-year-old, live-at-home son who's just landed his first job, at a 99-Cent Store.

Another winner is "Ms. Casey Gives It Up," with Anderson playing an uptight substitute teacher whose sex ed lesson becomes an unexpected confessional on her first awkward sexual experience many years before.
And for pure levity, there's "Breaking It Down Old School" where Coco and Anderson play two grannies chaperoning a seventh-grade dance with a surprising wealth of hip-hop dance moves.

Coco's writing is fresh, contemporary and a laugh-a-minute, and she creates a wonderful array of women characters from all walks of life. Adding to the fun are the "gotcha" comedy songs penned by Kacey Jones that serve as musical interludes between scene changes, including "Nipples to the Wind," "How "How Do You Like These Babies Now" (about a woman's new breast implants) and "I Could Get Over Him (if I could get under you)," among others.

While the show was written by and about women, "Nipples to the Wind" has plenty of appeal for men. Some of the loudest laughs heard in the audience last weekend came from male showgoers.
Directed by Reno Venturi, "Nipples to the Wind" has high production values with creative costuming, lively choreography and its own soundtrack of original music. The play runs two hours, 20 minutes, with intermission and despite its provocative title is suitable for ages 13 and up.

Every Man I Love is Either Married Gay or Dead – LIVE

There is no comparison for Kacey Jones. Funny, cutting, quick as a whip Kacey Jones clearly has a close rapport with her audience and even riffs with them a bit on this CD . Sound quality is a big deal with recordings and notoriously uneven for live events, such is not the case for this CD. The sound is as clear as if it was made in one flawless take recorded live at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.

Jones’s eclectic musical sense of humor is punctuated on this CD by her short stand-up bits which serve as introductions to the humorous songs. As with many musical humorists (Borge, Stafford, Miller) the musical element of the songs on this CD often takes a backseat to the humor or lyrical elements, but there are times when Kacey Jones reveals she really knows her way around a fingerboard.

The title of the CD is a tip off that men are a focal point of quite a bit of the humor on this CD. There is gentleness to the jabs that fall on the male ego but Jones’ edge cuts both ways. Her rapier finds its mark in the swath of female insecurities and foibles about men with the same precise and easy sense of fun she uses to skewer men. Tracks like Why Can’t They Send ‘Em All and Waitin’ For The Guy to Die are as good hearted as they are good natured fun.

One of the hallmarks of a good live album is that the artist makes the efforts to include nothing but crowd pleasing tracks. Kacey Jones has gone out of her way to make that effort here. Songs from “The Sweet Potato Queens' Big~Ass Box of Music”, “Men Are Some of My Favorite People” and of course “Every Man I Love is Either Married, Gay, or Dead” and a generous helping of good segue bits and great timing make this a strong CD from the first track to the twenty-third. Yes there are twenty five tracks – those last three are just repeats of early tracks, but studio cuts – one supposes for radio play. There is no weak link on this CD it would be a great addition to any comedy collection.

Every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay or Dead -- LIVE
Kacey Jones
IGO Records
January 2005

The first time I reviewed a Kacey Jones album was way back in 2000 and it just happened to be Every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay, or Dead, the original version. That was my first encounter with the original twisted humor from this bizarre, talented, irreverent singer songwriter. It's obvious in listening to this offering that she has not sought out professional psychiatric help or changed her point of view on life, living or loving, thank goodness.

Recorded live in front of a sold-out crowd at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, it's crammed full of one-liners, hilarious standup and, of course, the rousing live versions of songs like "I'm Down to My Christmas Underwear," "Waitin' for the Guy to Die," "Put the Seat Back Down," "I Could Get Over Him" and "Dressin Up for the Pizza Man," one of my favorites. It's been a highly successful last couple of years for Jones who is the official songstress for The Sweet Potato Queens, a national organization with 5,000 chapters and over 50,000 members born out of three best-selling books by Jill Conner Browne who was also in the audience at the Bluebird.

Jones is literally everywhere, from Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion to guest spots on WSM radio in Nashville, you never know where or when she will pop up. One thing is for certain, though, you'll hear some of the most honest, down and dirty, highly humorous and just slightly bent material you've ever heard. It's like a sexy boxing match between men and women, and Jones wins by a knockout. She also happens to be one of the sweetest, down to earth and genuinely charming persons I have ever met, and she deserves every bit of the success that has come her way. It's live, it's funny, it's great, it's Kacey Jones at her finest.

Kacey Jones - Every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay or Dead  . . . Live! ( IGO Records)

From the opening monologue, where Kacey says that she should now be known by her new Moslem name Seldom Bin Laid to the plea to toilet train men in Put The Seat Back Down, this is a bundle of laughs. Men do come in for a fair amount of criticism but it's all in good fun and shouldn't be taken too seriously. The best way that I can describe Kacey is that she's a Country Victoria Wood. Cutting humour and a genuine rapport with the audience makes Kacey Jones a force to be reckoned with. She fills the spaces between the songs with what she calls bits and sometimes these are funnier than the songs.

Her ex-husband Bubba comes in for some particular attention on the Bubba bit and 1-900-Bubba and she's not adverse to make fun of herself with stories such as the one where she says that her doctor told her that she had furniture disease – that's where your chest falls into your drawers. She can be a bit risqué but never steps over the line. Song titles such as Waitin' For The Guy To Die and I'm Down To My Christmas Underwear will give you an idea of her humour. The first is her Anna Nicole Smith song (married an old guy for money) and the other is about having no clean underwear and having to wear the novelty Christmas pants (complete with antlers!!).

This is Kacey's first live solo album and this is her medium. Bring on some more!

ASSOCIATED PRESS - 12/06/04

KACEY JONES: "I'M DOWN TO MY CHRISTMAS UNDERWEAR" RAISES 12-HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR COOK CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

FORT WORTH (AP) -- Kacey Jones' single "I'm Down To My Christmas Underwear" may be a jokey holiday song, but it's already raised some 12-hundred dollars for Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth.  Jones and her friend Peggy Bradley wrote a song about how far behind they were in doing their laundry -- how they were down to wearing that red gift pair of undies in the very back of the drawer.  But when X-M show host Bill Mack heard the song, he jokingly asked Jones whether she had a pair to auction for charity.  Mack's nationwide audience of truckers responded generously, with some bidders calling back to say they'd send in their pledges even though they didn't win. In Nashville, Jones says that it's a little strange to be Fed Ex'ing autographed undies to a stranger, but it is for a good cause.  She laughs, "I don't think you'd expect Martina McBride to be autographing panties and sending them to Bill Mack -- probably because she has more class than I do." Nonetheless, Jones says they did so much good for a good cause that she may next auction off a pair in Huntsville, Alabama.

"I've recorded many live albums but never one like this. No words can adequately describe the manner in which Kacey dominated the room that night. Everyone was caught up in the moment, forgetting the "real world" just outside the door. It's important to note that the amazing crowd response you hear on this disc is authentic. There's been no augumenting of applause and laughter. This album proves that a great entertainer needs no more than an acoustic guitar and a microphone to produce magic."
